Photo taken at 30 Years of Age SHAALTARAH(Nahda + AU x Honepuna)Born 21st November 1979Editorial: Copyright Sandie MacLean* Produced 19 NZAHBS Registered Purebred Arabian progeny, the highest of any mare * Progeny exported to 4 countries
In the beginning of Shaaltarah’s story it was a significant time for the NZ Arab Horse Breeders Society. An exciting collection of two-year-old fillies had been gathered from Breeders around Canterbury at John and Bev Morrissey’s, Taralea Stud in Greenpark. It was the first practical session of the Mr Don Burt Judges Seminar. In a field behind the stables disturbing the poplar leaves of the early winter, was a homebred not so little bundle of cadence and curves, a very supple feminine dark bay filly named Shaaltarah. Purchased by Mrs Robyn Bailey for the newly formed Gowandale Stud (Amberleigh) at Ohoka, this very popular filly affectionately known as ‘Heidi’ suffered an injury to her off fore hoof with subsequent infection, which was to keep her from a show career for life. Shaaltarah was the result of combining recently introduced European/Russian Bloodlines. That of Nahda, bred by Tanya Hawley and was owned by an extraordinary lady, Mrs Enid Goulter of Seven Oaks fame near Blenheim. A blending of these bloodlines with those of the NZAHBS Inc. Founding President, Mr A R Ayliffe from Waimate North and those of early breeders Mr and Mrs E W Wilson, through her dam Honepuna. At present in 2010 Shaaltarah is believed to be one of only two Nahda progeny left living in NZ. Through pursued circumstances Shaaltarah, was purchased by David Marshall of Holly Farm in the spring of 1985 where even till this day she has lived her life carving out her always growing influence. Regardless of whom she encounters Shaaltarah has never failed to stir the senses or imagination. Less than two of her current 19 babies have been held onto as each year her babies are keenly sort. With each year Shaaltarah attracts new admirers, maintains the energy of others and creates the dreams of her closest companions personally and directly by her ever-growing legacy of progeny through their own achievements. After substantial research recording the number of progeny produced who are registered with the NZAHBS from Purebred Arabian Mares (also registered with the NZAHBS) we have found Shaaltarah to be in the very top echelon of that list of mares. We believe from this group of outstanding mares that Shaaltarah is now the only one still alive. Not only that, it is believed she may well have produced THE highest number of recorded progeny of any Purebred Arabian Mare in NZ. Shaaltarah has foaled 19 registered Purebred Arabian progeny in her 30 grand years. What a phenomenal legacy. Even now she is the best mare to use for Semen collections and the best “grandmother” for all weanlings. Shaaltarah is one very special treasure for us all to adore.

PROGENY IN SUMMARY
PROGENY IN DETAIL Naatarah (Exp Australia) (By Naaddel + AU) Naatarah has been the integral matriarch mare of Ian and Greg Roach’s Arabian breeding program with the majority of their horses in some way are a decendant of Naatarah. Naatarah’s first foal, Naaya by Clifton Park Naadar has herself produced three foals one of which is Epaaneema (Vegas) who is Supreme champion purebred at "Images of the Future" show. Another is Asaki (Vegas), dam of Supreme champion purebred at Yarra Valley Arabian Show. Both of these mares are now valued broodmares. Shaalbanah (By Naaddel + AU) Shaalbanah has gone onto be a successful riding horse and best friend. Shamir Baarnard (Exp Germany) (By Cyrasa) Exported to Germany with his lifelong owner Silke Rumpf. He has not only been a wonderful companion he is teaching her 3 children to ride and love the Arabian horse. Through his presence in Germany and Switzerland he has created interest and discussion about New Zealand. His family have been back to New Zealand several times to visit his mother, Shaaltarah with the latest visit this year which included their three children. Dahrah (By Jabal) Dahrah has been breeding on in the Nelson area and is much loved by her owner. She has produced at least six foals of which the females have gone on to produce equally as well producing several well know endurance athletes.
Going back to Saamirah, she had a foaling complication when foaling Adjani so then she went on to a highly charged performance career of her own. She has recently competed in the Springston Trophy and delivered pleasing results. Champion Show filly/mare and loved riding horse for well known Endurance rider, Jenny Rouse. Now seen at local shows by recently new owner, Cathy Davidson. HFA Trevinir (By Simeon Sadir +AU/Exp UK via UAE) Trevinir is a quiet schoolmaster hack currently in the Deep South of the South Island. Near on 16hh. A big boy with a big heart who is teaching wee people why we all love Arabian horses. HFA Breznir (By Simeon Sadir +AU/Exp UK via UAE)
Bentley (Exp Qatar) (By Saracen Karim +Can) Like many of Shaaltarah’s other progeny, when Bentley started growing he grew to an unusually tall height. He was measured a fraction under 16hh as an 8 year old. Due to this growth he was started under saddle as a six year old to allow him more time to mature. Once started under saddle Bentley was soon clocking up kilometres on the Endurance tracks around New Zealand. He quickly became a team favourite and since his export is still sorely missed. While trained by Holly Farm he completed over 2030 kilometres with various riders, including being leased by the Australian rider, Paul Brown on behalf of the Malaysian team at the 2006 North Island Championships. Bentley won 4 rides and two third placings. His major completions in NZ were: 2004 South Island Championships CEI2* 100km, 2004 NZ National Championships CEI3* 160km and 2006 North Island Championships CEI*** 160km with aforementioned, Paul Brown.
Bentley was exported to The Emir of Qatar and is proudly a member of the Al Shaqab Endurance Team, where he is also a favourite character. In 2006 he was transported over a week from Leeston to Doha via Singapore and Amsterdam. With less than one week in Qatar, Bentley was ridden by Abdullah Al Marri in the 2006 15th Asian Games, placing a credible 16th in the CEI*** 120km event. A proud Kiwi moment and certainly excellent exposure for the New Zealand bred Endurance horses. Six weeks later Bentley won the Junior GCC Cup and then travelled to Europe to compete at Euston Park for a 2nd place in the CEI3* 120km event. We are watching in anticipation for Bentleys next outing, flying the flag for New Zealand. Due to the quality and ability of Bentley there has been notable interest in the NZ horses resulting in at least 4 more exports to that region. Dahma Saparah (Exp UAE) (By Simeon Sapar + AU) Saparah and her owner Nigel Kerr were both learning the ropes as they embarked on what was to be an impressive endurance career for the newcomers. Below are a few words from Nigel himself; Dahma Saparah was chosen for The Crown Prince of Dubai, HH.Sheikh Hamdam bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and was exported to Dubai. Surayah El Sadir (By Simeon Sadir +AU/Exp UK via UAE) Surayah is loved, owned and ridden by Donna McLean in Canterbury and attends Endurance and Trail rides when her busy owner Donna, can fit in.
